Historic Steam Locomotive Makes Appearance in Boise
The anticipated arrival of the historic steam locomotive attracted more people that I could have imagined. There was electricity in the air as children played on the tracks and adults shared stories. The excitement was obvious as everyone watched down the track to see this beauty approach the station. A blow of the whistle alerts everyone to it’s impending arrival. People lined the tracks along the depot as this historic steam locomotive makes an appearance in Boise. The steam billowing from the top of this sleek black locomotive is a sight to behold. Furthermore, the intense beauty of the powerful machine as it approaches the station is breathtaking and everyone can feel its power.
The History
Union Pacific Steam Locomotive 844, “The Living Legend” was built in 1944 and has been in constant service. Joined by the 1958 challenger dome coach it is travelling across Southern Idaho and the Treasure Valley. This beauty was put into special service after being retired from passenger service approximately 60 years ago when the diesel engine came into service. UP 844, called “The Living Legend” began this excursion in Cheyenne, Wyoming and will make several stops in Idaho before returning to its home. In addition to Idaho, this train travels 1,000 of miles across the U.S. to share the thrill of seeing a piece of a bygone era.
Watching it Come into the Station
The events of the weekend centered around the arrival of this amazing historic icon. Over 2,000 people turned out to be part of something that may be a once in a lifetime opportunity. As they share stories with their children and impart pieces of history, everyone enjoys the beauty of this sleek black beast. The imposing size and power cause people to step back in awe. The haunting sound of the whistle calls you as it prepares to rumble across the tracks. You want to be as close as possible to feel the power, see the beauty. There is nothing like watching it come right at you.

Finally, as we get more and more technologically savvy in the world it seems that some of the old things get left behind. As a result of this event, vast amounts of people came out to relive history. For some, this was part of their past, for others it was something to new to learn. Most of all, it was a chance to see what make the world so great!
