San Francisco is a city of many faces. A solid mix of old and new no matter where you look. Take BART from the airport, get off at Union Square and a few blocks uphill you will find yourself at The Cartwright Hotel San Francisco’s historic, unique boutique hotel. Steeped in history this 105-year-old hotel is a mix of the past and the present. Part of the BW Premium Collection, The Cartwright Hotel is perfect for your next getaway and here’s why!
The Cartwright Hotel Lobby
Warm and inviting with rich tones, original hardwood floors and holiday decorations make you feel at home. Just behind the reservation desk are the wooden key slots that remind you of how things use to be done. While no longer in use, it is nice to see a piece of history still on display. If you wander to the left of the desk, you will find yourself in a sitting area. Chairs, sofas and even a chess game (or two) set up around the fireplace. In the morning you can have coffee by the fire, admire the antique armoire or just sit and visit with family and friends. You can take the elevator to your room or climb the original staircase to your floor. Take your walking shoes as there are six floors.
The Staff
The Cartwright staff are some of the best anywhere. As you walk in the front door chances are you will be greeted by Tony who is the Concierge and as been with The Cartwright for 40 years. A wealth of information and history on what make this hotel so great. If you are lucky, Tai and Mari will get you all checked into your rooms. They will make you smile and feel like family right from the beginning. Looking for things to do, places to see and eat? You will want to ask Tai, Mari and Tony. They will share the secrets only the locals know.
The Rooms
Choose a suite if available because you will want the separate sitting area. Remember this is an older hotel so the rooms are cozy and comfy! Upgraded with flat screen TV’s, marble counter-tops/floors in the bathroom and pillow top beds, you can experience some of the comforts from home. However, you will still get the unique architecture of the original rooms. The high ceilings, rounded windows and ornate detail around the ceiling will transport you back in time. You can definitely tell that The Cartwright catered to high end clientele. Right outside our room was a fire escape just like you see on TV. Steam heat and air conditioners in the windows complete the ambiance.
The Location
Just blocks from Union Square, The Cartwright is the perfect location to everything and anything you want to see or do. Unique shops and fine dining are just steps from your door. If you want a blast from the past, check out Lori’s Diner at the end of the block. Chinatown is just a little further down toward Union Square. Want to venture out a little further, grab a bus, cable car, or streetcar within walking distance of the hotel.
