A passion for beer led Paul Holle and Kevin Jones to quit their jobs and start Sawtooth Brewery. First opened in Ketchum in 2011, they continue to grow not only in beer varieties and locations but also popularity. Sawtooth Public House is located in Ketchum, Idaho and Sawtooth Brewery & Tap Room is located in Hailey Idaho both must do stops when you are up in the area. Here’s a bit of the history from Paul:
Atmosphere
Sawtooth Brewery and Tap Room is located just off the main drag in Hailey Idaho. I will tell you that they can be a bit hard to find but definitely worth it! Signs guide the way to this very popular destination in this community. Tap room in the front, brewing in the back and a small kitchen make up this unique brewery with a big heart. When you first walk in you will see a wall of mugs – all part of the “mug club”. If you plan to visit frequently, you just need to sign up.
Mug Club
The perfect gift for a “favorite beer drinker”, you receive your own numbered mug. The perks with this membership are amazing. For an annual fee of $45 you receive numerous free fills on a variety of occasions, option to use it at both locations and the 5th year is free. Free is always good and these guys go above and beyond to honor your membership!
Beers
There seems to be no limit to what Paul and his team come up with to offer. Right now they are doing a line of “Free Solo” offerings on top of their usual flagship, seasonal and pub beers. Start with a flight and ask them to give you a variety of what they have going at the time. You won’t be disappointed. According to Paul, “our beer is less than 3 hours from grain to glass”. Some of our favorites from the tasting include:
- Rebecca’s Private Idaho Queen’s Kolsch: “German Kolsch brewed, pretty classic recipe made with Idaho Pilsner Malt from Mountain Malt in Idaho Falls”. Definitely smooth, light, refreshing and packed with flavor it is easy to see why this is a favorite at Sawtooth Brewery. As result, it gives you a warm, cozy feeling while you drink it. Perfect for those lazy days with friends.
- Quickie Sour Belgian Brown: “Belgian brown that was then aged in a soured whiskey barrel with cherries and raspberries.” Sours are becoming very popular and it is easy to see why. The unique flavor gives you an experience not easily forgotten. I am finding that I really enjoy sours and this one is a favorite of mine. So much so, I needed a crowler to take home.
- Last Chair Stout: “Chocolate, Coffee, and Caramel take you away in a smooth, full body American stout”. Never thought I’d like a stout but this is one of my favorites. Such a great blend of flavors with a rich and smooth taste.
Crowlers, Growlers, and Merchandise
Not sure what to take home? Crowlers and growlers make the perfect way to take home a bit of all your favorites. Plus, because the can, you can also take home a six pack if you prefer. They also have a great selection of merchandise you can purchase on the spot. For me, it was a couple of crowlers and a glass to enjoy my brews at home. There is definitely something for everyone.
Brewed Thoughts
We loved hanging out at Sawtooth Brewery while in Hailey Idaho. The atmosphere has a small town feel with a big heart. You will definitely find several brews you like and might even get a tour of the brewery if you are lucky! Grab a bite to eat, relax and enjoy the beer because there is no better way to spend an afternoon than right here!
