Destination #1 — Deception Pass and Bridge

Deception Pass Bridge

High above the deep and turbulent channel stands the majestic Deception Pass Bridge that connects Whibey and Fidalgo Islands.  Feeling like a bit of adventure?  There is a 3-foot sidewalk on each side to take you across the bridge.  The bridge spans both Deception Pass and Canoe Pass.  Given the name of Deception Pass by George Vancouver due to the fact that the pass misled him into thinking that Whidbey Island was actually a peninsula.  Rich in history and beauty, this is an experience you do not want to miss.  One of the most beautiful ways to reach this area is by taking Chuckanut Drive as you leave Fairhaven.

Destination #2 — Chuckanut Drive (State Route 11)

Ready for a beautiful drive on a scenic byway then you definitely want to take a drive on Chuckanut.  A gentle flutter of falling leaves provided the backdrop for our recent trip.    The journey through the Chuckanut mountains gave us ample opportunity to enjoy the tree lined winding roads.  Scenic viewpoints gave us a glimpse of Bellingham and Samish Bays, plus the San Juan Islands.  Deception Pass and Bridge are a great place to get some fantastic photos.  A word of caution . . . get too close to the edge of the cliffs, and you will have a long, bumpy road down to water below.  There are some rugged paths to get you closer to the amazing views but the trail has loose shale and can be tricky to maneuver.  Once beyond the mountains, you enter the farmland which boasts horse farms, farmer’s markets and so much more.  If you have the time, you will want to check out some of the fabulous restaurants you will encounter along the way.

Destination #3 — Fairhaven Historical District

Fairhaven Historical District

Go back in time with a visit to the Fairhaven Historical District founded in the late 1880’s.  Ambiance abounds as you walk along the cobblestone streets to encounter unique stores and restaurants.  Street lights bring back the nostalgia of yester year.  Nestled on the southside of Bellingham with Western Washington University northeast, Fairhaven is a pleasant step back in time.  Come to relax, enjoy the historic buildings, or even access the Amtrak Station or Cruise Terminal to take you to your next adventure.  Fairhaven Historical District is a definite must-see when in Washington State.

Destination #4 — Anacortes

A coast community located on Fidalgo Island situated between Seattle and Vancouver, BC.  Known as “an island getaway that you can drive to” Anacortes has something for everyone.  Established in Incorporated in 1891, Anacortes was prominent due to its fishing, canneries, and timber mills.  Today, you can enjoy beautiful marinas, outdoor exploration of all kinds or walk along historic downtown.  Experience unique shops, casual and fine dining as well as enjoy a weekend farmers market.  Experience a ferry ride to some of the local islands or take a trip into Canada.  You definitely want to be sure to take in the Tulip and Art Festivals if you get the chance.  Whether you come for the day, or plan a longer stay – you will love spending time in Anacortes.

Destination #5 — Oak Harbor

The largest city on Whidbey Island, Oak Harbor is home to the Naval Air Base.  A waterfront community settled in 1851, it is known as the “playground of the Puget Sound”.  Activities are abundant in this waterfront city.  Beautiful parks, water activities, hiking, bird and whale watching, plus clamming/crabbing a just a few of the things you can do.  Just a stone’s throw from Deception Pass, you can take in all the beautiful views, go for a drive or just relax in the park.  If you love shopping, take a journey along historic downtown where you will find some amazing products and services.  Ready for a bite to eat?  You need to visit Flyers – one of the best places to eat.  The food is fantastic, the people are fun and top it off with an incredible happy hour.  Furthermore, if you love flying you will definitely enjoy the flight memorabilia.  For more information on upcoming events, be sure to check out the Chamber website.  So much to do and never enough time to fit it all in so plan ahead to spend some time.

Destination #6 — Whidbey Camano Islands

First thought of as a peninsula by George Vancouver, Whidbey Camano Islands in Washington are located right in the middle of the Puget Sound.  Coined “the shortest distance to far away” this area is perfect to shake off the stress and get ready to relax.  Year-round activities, culinary dining delights, beautiful beaches, sweeping vistas and great art are just a few of the things you can experience on the islands.  Get ready to plan your next getaway by checking out all that Whidbey Camano Islands has to offer.

Destination #7 — Birch Bay

A quaint bay community situated in Blaine Washington that is small in population but big in beauty.  Perfect for weekend getaways or plan to join in the one-of-a-kind activities offered by the Birch Bay Chamber of Commerce.  We love it up here for a variety of reasons.  The people are great, food is fabulous and waking up to a view of the bay is always amazing.  It is a great place to relax, rejuvenate and enjoy the sunrise/sunsets that make you believe anything is possible.  Located less than 30 minutes from the Canadian border, it is easy to take a day trip into Vancouver.  Be sure to check out the Peace Arch where Canada and the U.S. meet.  The feeling of being able to stand in two countries at one time is something you don’t forget.

The Pacific Northwest is made up of some incredible places to visit – some maybe not as well known as others but definitely worth the trip.  We love to venture off-the-beaten-path and discover new places.  Sometimes it best to go where the road will take you because you never know what you will find.  We hope that you enjoyed this sneak peek into our recent discoveries in Washington State.
