History abounds in Texas and what better place to explore than San Antonio. Missions, caverns, Riverwalk and so much more make up this quick two-day trip to San Antonio Texas.
7 Must See Attractions to Experience When in San Antonio Texas
There are 5 missions in total that we wanted to see and they were situated on a path starting at the Alamo continuing along the Riverwalk until you reach the end. We knew it would be a hike but we were ready. Since the trip would be about 10.1 miles each way, we decided to take an Uber out to the last one and work our way back. Easier said than done! We managed to hit the Alamo and two others before the heat got the better of us. Here’s our adventure.
Alamo – Mission San Antonio de Valero
One of the most iconic and recognized attractions, is the Alamo. We went early in the morning and we are so glad we did. Even in June, it is busy! As we walked up to the entrance of the Church, we couldn’t help but feel the power and presence of this story “300 years in the making”. Once inside, we walked the grounds, read the history and imagined what it must have been like all those years ago. Rich in history, there is so much to see. People dressed in period costume, sharing the story plus museums filled with artifacts and memorabilia. Inside the walls we walk the battleground, explore the ruins and listen to “A Story Bigger Than Texas”.
Mission San Juan – San Francisco de la Espada
Founded in 1690, is considered to be the “oldest of the East Texas missions”. The expansive grounds have a lot of fun buildings to explore plus a uniquely beautiful Church that is still in use today. I loved walking through the arches leading to a seating area overlooking the gardens. The National Historical Park Service has an area where you can explore the items unique to that particular mission.
Mission San Juan Capistrano – San Jose de los Nazonis
Fertile farmland, pastures and orchards made this a major supplier of fruit and vegetables. Laid out a bit differently than the others ones, it still had areas fun areas to explore. We were not able to go into the Church but there was a beautiful cross set back on the property that couldn’t be ignored. We toured the museum and then planned the next phase of the hike. The hike from Espada to San Juan was doable but it was warm so plan ahead and take plenty of water!
Riverwalk & Downtown San Antonio Texas
One of the most beautiful areas is Downtown San Antonio and the Riverwalk. Old buildings, beautiful architecture all are part of the Historic Downtown area that surrounds the Riverwalk. As we were walking along the Riverwalk, we saw a boat going along the river and decided to catch a ride on “Go Rio”. The guide shared the history along with unique antidotes about various building, bridges, restaurants and more as we took this tour from the river. We saw where Carol Burnett was born, Sandra Bullock filmed some of Miss Congeniality and viewed a hotel that was built room by room and then assembled. A great way to see and learn the history of this amazing City.
Hemisfair Park
Tower of the Americas caught our eye immediately as we started our walk along the river. We just had to check it out! A quick ride to the top gave us a spectacular 360 view of the City. As I got out to walk around the viewing area, I did notice that my balance was a bit off so beware, you feel like you are tilting! I wouldn’t have missed the view for anything. Once ground level, we walked through the park, enjoyed a variety of waterfalls, beautiful landscapes and artwork. One of our favorite pieces of artwork turned out to be Angel Wings – a perfect place for a photo op!
Natural Bridge Caverns
As we were driving into San Antonio, we decided to take a detour to see the Natural Bridge Caverns. What we didn’t expect was the long wait to tour the caverns themselves. Rather than wait, we decided to walk the grounds and see more of what else was available to do. They have a zipline, ropes course, cute stores and Blue Belle ice cream. Blue Belle’s home is in Texas so it is only fitting to enjoy this sweet, creamy treat! There was even a place that we could even pan for gems. There is so much to see and do but we would recommend planning ahead, get your cavern tickets online ahead of time.
Whataburger
A trip to San Antonio Texas is not complete without a stop at a Whataburger. Started in 1950 as a “humble burger stand” in Corpus Christie, this is a staple in Texas and throughout the country with 800 locations. At first when you look it the burger, it is deceiving. You pick it up and you realize you need both hands for this big, flavorful burger. A lot of food, that is for sure. I added some spicy ketchup and fries and I’ve got more than I can eat in one sitting! You gotta try one when you find one!
Adventure Grammy Recap
Since we had never been to San Antonio Texas, we weren’t sure what to expect. What we did learn, plan ahead, stay more than a few days and be ready for the heat. We didn’t make the whole 10-mile hike due to the heat. I would recommend getting a bus pass for the day and hike some and ride some as the bus will stop at each Mission. You could also rent a bike, they had a station at both of those Missions, to do just that. The Riverwalk is a must do! Take the boat ride, then enjoy a stroll through the parks, and grab a bite to eat along the river. You just have to take the elevator up to the top of Tower of the Americas to a breathtaking view of the City! We can’t wait to go back and get our adventure on! Join us?
